Winner 2006

Client: DfES
Project: Sonica Spanish

The DFeS commissioned 3T Productions to create an innovative programme for teaching and learning Spanish at an early stage. Key targets for the project were to ensure that the teaching of Spanish could fit into the hectic timetable for a primary school, by integrating it within other activities; supporting teachers in their teaching and meeting the requirements of the Key Stage 2 Framework for modern foreign languages and the Languages Ladder - the National Voluntary Recognition Scheme for foreign languages.
The finished service provides teachers with 15 minute blocks of teaching through an online teacher interface that includes: 240 fifteen minute activities, whole class or individual activities and extensive teacher support including an audiovisual dictionary. For pupils the project delivers a highly appealing way for kids to learn a foreign language through interactive experiences as diverse as karaoke, dance mat activities and interactive adventure games. The family of Sonica characters covers a wide range of learning scenarios and has been designed to have continued appeal over a three year learning period. Sonica Spanish became available to school from July 2005 and although results are still pending, trials across 10 schools in 4 different LEAs were very successful.
