This is the fourth year I’ve been chairman of judges for the Big Chip awards. Each year there have been more entries, and while the quality of individual categories varies from year to year, the overall standard remains dauntingly high.
It certainly seems like an exciting time for the North West. The established agencies are growing, client lists are getting stronger (something else that’s apparent from the awards entries), and a whole raft of new talent is emerging. Add to this the development of Media City and the impact of the BBC’s move north, and the general sense that the industry as a whole is on the verge of another dramatic leap forwards, and the potential for growth in the region looks nothing short of thrilling.
The judging of these awards brought together a number of extremely talented and experienced people. We evaluated the entries in each category before setting the standard that would be required for an entry to make the shortlist in that category. We reconvened a few weeks after the shortlisting to review those decisions and to decide on the winners. In each case a certain standard was required of the winner, which was why in two categories the judges decided not to make an award. I’d like to thank all the judges for the diligence and enthusiasm they brought to the process. And I’d like to congratulate all the winners of this year’s Big Chip awards.
